Dan looked at Phil with a worried expression. Phil was giggling quietly and talking to what appeared to be himself, he'd been doing this often, and when he did, it was like he wasn't even there anymore. He wouldn't respond to anything Dan did, and then when he was done, he'd either fall asleep or collapse. He'd only collapsed once and he came round a few minutes later, but Dan was still incredibly scared for his friend. Little did he know about the voice in Phil's head. A man who's name was Gerard. He told Phil funny stories that made him laugh and cheered him up when he was sad, but once Gerard got angry at Phil. You see, Dan had said he was worried about Phil, so he told Gerard to go away and never come back, he got so angry he took over Phil and made him collapse. Phil began to fear Gerard, but soon he felt safe whenever his voice came back. Dan got up from his seat and sat down next to Phil. He looked into his eyes and saw that they were small and distant, like Phil was far, far away from here. Phil was muttering under his breath. Slowly, Dan put his hand on Phil's shoulder and shook him slightly.
"Phil?" he said softly "There's nobody here apart from me buddy."
Miraculously, Phil turned his head and looked directly and Dan. Then, he noticed Phil's eyes were wide and terrified. He felt a firm grip on his wrist and looked to see it was Phil's.
"G-G-Gerard...Gerard d-d-did-didn't-l-like what you j-j-just said" Phil said quietly.
"Who's Ger...OW!" Dan was cut off by a sudden paint on his arm. He looked and saw Phil's nails were digging into his skin. He tried to pull away but the grip was tight. Dan looked at his friend and saw in his face, that Phil wasn't there anymore.
"I don't like what you just said Dan." said a husky voice that definetley wasn't Phil's.
"I'm sorry! Please let go of my arm!" Dan squealed trying to pull away unsuccessfully
"You're going to pay for that." the voice said and before Dan could do anything, he was being thrown across the room. Then his head hit the wall and everything went black.
Dan woke up to see Phil curled up in a ball on the floor. He was sobbing and shaking. Luckily, Dan didn't have any injuries apart from the knock to his head and the nail marks on his arms. Without thinking about it, he rushed over to Phil.
"Everything's going to be okay Phil" Dan said and went to go rub Phil's back when he jumped up suddenly and ran to the corner of the room.
"Stay away from me! I'll only end up hurting you again!" Phil screamed as he curled back into a ball and rocked himself back and forth.
"You didn't mean to, I know you didn't, Phil please let me help you!" Dan cried but all he got was Phil sobbing uncontrollably. There was only one thing he could do. He walked to his room and quietly shut the door so that Phil wouldn't think he was doing anything, pulled out his phone and dialed the number for emergency services.
999 what's your emergency?
"My friend's gone insane."
What do you mean by that sir?
"He's been laughing and talking to himself for weeks now, he says there's a voice in his head called Gerard that talks to him and makes him do things."
Has he shown any violence?
"Well, it's weird but, I was talking to him just now and I tried telling him that it was only the two of us in the room, and then a completely different voice came over him and he threw me across the room."
Would you like to press charges?
"No, I just need help for my friend. Please just send help for him."
Please give us your address and we'll send help straight away.
Dan waited nervously for the ambulance to turn up. He couldn't deal with it anymore. Phil's sobs had gotten louder and Dan just couldn't cope with it. Eventually, he heard the door being knocked down and multiple people walking in. He ran to his bedroom door and into the living room where Phil was sitting in the corner looking absolutely petrified. People surrounded him as he looked at Dan for help but he couldn't do anything. But before he could even mouth a sorry, Phil had gotten up and ran to the other side of the room and clung onto the table leg, his eyes scrunched up tight. It wasn't long before he was being pulled off it and out of the room.
"Please! Please leave me alone!" he cried as he was dragged out onto the street and into the back of the ambulance. He kicked and pulled but eventually he was tied down onto a bed in the back. Dan climbed in with another person and they suddenly started moving. Dan reached out and grabbed onto Phil's hand, but he just carried on pulling and screaming.
"Calm down." Dan said softly stroking his thumb over Phil's knuckle, but he wouldn't stop.
"For fuck sake Phil calm down you idiot." the voice in his head said. Gerard was back. Phil turned to face Dan and struggled harder then ever.
"Make him go away!" he screamed at Dan. Then he felt a sharp pain in his arm and started to feel drowsy. Dan watched as Phil's body shook violently then stilled and his eyes closed. He just gripped onto his friend's hand harder as he watched him sleep. He looked so peaceful, more at peace then he had for awhile anyway, although there were still tear stains running down his face and he was ghostly pale.
"When we get to hospital, we need to take him straight to the observation room. There doctors and nurses will watch everything he does, but he won't know it. Try getting him to talk when he wakes up." the nurse said and Dan nodded.
Phil woke up to bright lights and white. He was so tired. He went to go rub his eyes until he realized he was restrained. Dan noticed the slight movement in Phil's arm and looked to see his eyes were opening.
"Hey." Dan said squeezing Phil's hand and giving him a comforting smile.
"Where am I?" Phil croaked. His throat felt awful and so did he.
"Hospital." Dan said it slowly so that it would register in Phil's drugged up brain.
"Oh." Phil sighed and closed his eyes again. He wanted to go back to sleep but he couldn't, he could hear the incredibly quiet voice in the back of his head.
"Who are you talking to Phil?" Dan asked, he snapped open his eyes and realized he'd been muttering back to Gerard.
"G-G-Ger-Gerard." he whispered his name fearing the voice might talk louder if he heard Phil.
"Who is he?" Dan said but quickly saw Phil's eyes changing. The husky voice was coming. Dan made the signal he was told to give with his hand if nurses and doctors needed to stand outside.
"Phil who is he?" he repeated as Phil's eyes closed and his tense body went limp. It was a few moments later his eyes opened again and an evil grin spread across his face, remembering what happened last time Dan pulled his hand free.
"Does it matter to you?" the husky voice said, Dan got up and backed away slightly.
"Who are you?" Dan asked trying to hide the fear in his voice.
"Kill me Dan."
"What?"
"Fucking kill me you worthless piece of shit!" the voice shouted and started pulling so hard on the restraints that the bed shook. Phil's heart rate shot up and machine's started going off as Nurses burst in. "Let go of me!". The voice shouted as Nurses held him down and sedated him. It took a while, but eventually Phil's body stilled, his eyes fluttered shut and his heart rate went back to normal. Dan didn't realize how heavy his breathing was until silence fell over the room. A nurse turned Phil's head so it was facing the ceiling as Dan sat back down and grabbed his hand.
"Call us if that happens again." the nurse said kindly before she left. Dan didn't understand what had just happened, one minute Phil was fine, the next, his voice had changed and he was telling Dan to kill him.
"I-I-I'm S-S-Sor-Sorry." Phil whispered in his sleep.
"You'll be okay, I promise." Dan replied, although he wasn't so sure himself.
